Cutty Sark ship models
Cutty Sark – one of the famous maritime ships in the world of England – was exhibited again for people visiting as part of a series of cultural events which served the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
During the mid 1800’s the Tea Clippers used to race from China back to the UK, with the new season’s crop. The Cutty Sark made her maiden voyage in January 1870. Between 1870-1877 she carried mainly tea, but was never able to win the tea race. She was exhibited again on the diamond ceremony of the 60th reign of Queen Elizabeth II after being restored in 2006.
In 1920 she was sold again and re-named the ‘Maria Do Amparo’ and in 1922 she was re-fitted in London. Captain Dowman purchased her, raised the Red Ensign, and she came home again. In 1924 she was restored as a Tea Clipper but was presented by Captain Dowman’s widow to the Thames Nautical Training College where the Cutty Sark became a training ship.
This ship model of the Cutty Sark tea clipper is totally handcrafted from scratch. The hull of the model is built using plank on frame technique. The lower section of the hull of the ship model is copper plated using thin rectangular copper sheeting which are individually cut and fixed side by side on the surface of the hull. The copper plating achieved on this ship model is immaculate. The upper part of the hull is lacquer painted black for a striking finish. The colors used on this ship model are an exact match of those used on the Cutty Sark docked in London, Greenwich.
